Pictorials

Jasper is an Amsterdam Signpainter, born in 1971.
He has worked as an illustrator in the advertising industry, sketching out international campains, storyboards and the occasional editorial artwork for a big part of his career. Mostly the digital work.
Always interested in traditional crafts however, his attention was drawn to paint signs and letters. Today he works together with a group called ‘Amsterdam Signpainters’ doing just that. Once in a while Jasper works on some cool illustration projects.

Jasper works and has worked for several clients like Marqt, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and many many more.

Mark Baty Color Theory

I love telling stories through art. These stories cannot be constrained by processes and techniques but are driven by the longing to show interconnections to the past, present or future or human emotions such as strength, togetherness, love, respect and intellectual curiosity.

My appreciation for mankind, creatures, nature and constructive arts gives me a solid basis to work from. What began as a desire to make a living using my creative skills has over the course of a long career evolved into a passion for telling a spirited story through art.

This determination to tell stories through art has allowed me to expand my definition of “my art” and in some cases permitted me to embrace the spirit and skills of fellow artists, particularly in the area of large-scale public art. Working alone or as a team is equally satisfying if the story is told, and the spirit is honored- whether it is my spirit and passion for the work itself or whether it is the spirit and passion of the viewer.

Chalkboard Menu Lettering and Illustrating

Chalkboards are more than just chalk, the majority of my signmaking career has been mastering the creation of quick eye catching easy to navigate yet professional looking chalkboards using a variety of methods and materials.

I will demonstrate how to produce an effective layout as well as how to draw illustrations that bring the chalkboard to life. I will also be sharing tips, tricks, and trade secrets I’ve picked up over the last 30 years.

Mark Oatis

Luscious Layouts

Inspired by the observations of Mike Stevens, we’ll explore Compulsive Graphic Relativity, useful in analyzing our designs and in making them even more successful. We’ll look at examples of the principle at work, then embark on exercises to solve everyday sign layout problems. All levels of experience are welcome. I’ll bring paper, pencils and pens. You supply the enthusiasm!

My career in signs began with my entry into the Sign and Pictorial Painters union apprenticeship in 1972. That training, together with the experience of joining with fellow apprentices to form Letterheads, has made my life in our craft rich beyond measure. I’m encouraged and energized by the commitment and passion of today’s sign artists. I follow their example, and seek new challenges. Excellence in our craft is a lifelong pursuit.

Solo Signs

Noel & Anna Weber

A Craftsman's Journey

Noel Weber entered the sign trade in 1971 at the age of 23. He already had two years of education at Chicago’s famed ‘Institute of Lettering and Design’ when he found work in a real sign shop as a 3rd year apprentice. With a few brushes in a tackle box, and a desire to keep learning, Noel soon left Chicago to begin his creative journey out west.

Noel’s presentation will talk about that 50+ year journey from brushes to computers – and how they have managed to keep the creativity in their award-winning work at Classic Designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there parking available?

There is no parking available on museum property. You are therefore encouraged to carpool to and from your hotel.

The museum has arranged for a limited amount of free parking on three off-site areas, one of which is adjacent to the museum and the other two which are within two blocks of the museum. A shuttle will run in the morning and evening between the two off-site parking locations. There is also limited parking on the street adjacent to the museum.

Should I bring my signkit?

The majority of the seminars and presentations are not “hands-on” in nature, but there will be an active Panel Jam area with easels for painting and two tents outside for

pinstriping demonstrations. There will also be several wall projects to be completed during the meet.

Keep in mind the airlines’ policies prohibiting or limiting transportation of materials. Brushes and non-liquid materials are less of a risk, but you need to make the best decision you can based on your airline. There will be ample paint and other materials available at the meet.

Can I just register for one day and receive a reduced rate?

No. All registrants are required to pay the full fee of $300.00, whether they are present for one, two or three days.

Should I make a project to bring and trade?

Letterhead meet projects are a tradition for many past Letterhead meets. While there are no formal arrangements for trading projects, you may want to connect with another Letterhead that you know is coming and trade with them, or you may make a project and bring it to trade, or simply make and bring a project to share your expertise. There is artwork on the website for your use.

Is food available at the museum?

The cost of registration includes continental breakfasts and lunches each the three days of the meet—Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All of the four Letterhead hotels serve a full breakfast on each day of your stay. Two of the lunches will be box lunches; by unanimous request, the third lunch will be catered by Camp Washington Chili. Dinner is on your own each evening.

Because of the number of attending Letterheads, continental breakfasts will be available each morning from 7:30 – 9:30 am; lunch will be available from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. All food will be served in the Barn Room where tables and chairs for 160 will be arranged. Seating will also be available in the Letterheads Lounge area—a short walk from the Barn Room and adjacent to the Panel Jam easels and Vendor tables.

Do we need to stay at one of the four “official” hotels?

You are not required to reserve rooms at one of the four hotels listed on the website. Rooms have been reserved at these hotels for your convenience as June is a busy month in Cincinnati.

There are two motels located very close to the museum—Rest Inn and Budget Host—but we do not recommend them.

Should I bring a portfolio?

Letterhead meets have a long tradition of signpainters bringing their portfolios to share, so doing so is encouraged. A Portfolio Area with tables will be designated.

Can I bring a cooler with drinks?

The museum will provide free soda throughout the meet; water will be available throughout the museum in five watercoolers.

Due to state liquor laws, it is prohibited to bring alcoholic beverages into the museum. The museum does have a liquor license: Wine and beer will be available for

purchase from one of the museum’s two in-house bars each evening from 5:00 – 9:00 pm.

Is smoking permitted in the museum?

Smoking and any other use of tobacco—including chew and vaping–is prohibited in the museum. There will be designated smoking areas outside the museum.

Are there projects happening during the meet such as wall painting, etc. than I can get involved in?

Yes! When registering, please select Yes on the question about participating in projects during the meet. The project foreman will contact you about specific details and what is required of you.
